The Witches Cup is at its core a community event. This is, and has been, our motivation from the day we started the race 10 years ago. Our goal was to create an event that showcased our community, drew upon the very best in our fans, volunteers, and sponsors, and shared our love of cycling. As the race organizers, we are committed to the values of our community and respecting the diversity of voices.

That being said, we earnestly apologize for any comments made in poor taste and that were hurtful to many members of our community. Although we did not hear the comments personally, any comments of the nature reported to us are not in line with our values in our capacity as race organizers, and as individuals. We have had a long and frank conversation with the person that made the comments that have been brought to our attention. He is sincere in his regret and has apologized to us, our sponsors and volunteers, the city leadership, and to the community as a whole. We are resolute in our commitment to our community and to creating a welcoming and safe place. We will learn from this.

Our promise is to continue to provide an event that reflects Salem’s values and showcase a city in which we have been privileged to be apart of for the last 10 years.

The Witches Cup is labor of love, and we hope to continue to share this great event with our fans, sponsors, volunteers, and officials for many years to come.

The Witches Cup is a criterium - short fast bicyle race requiring a mix of good technical skills. In particular, riders must have the ability to corner rapidly and sharply — and riding safely with a large group on a short circuit and exceptional fitness to attack other riders and repeatedly accelerate hard from corners..

About the Witches Cup

On Wednesday, August 9th, Salem comes alive with the unmistakable bee-hive hum of professional bicycle racing. North Shore residents and bicycling fans from across the country will experience one of the country’s most unique bicycle races.

This year's Witches Cup will provide cycling fans a breath taking front-row seat at a professional cycling event. With speeds averaging 25-35 mph and reaching up to 45 mph during sprints and attacks, an exciting race is guaranteed. One hundred riders compete throughout the 70 lap, 35 mile race around the historic Salem Common. The crowds are just feet from the racers and can see all the action during the ½ mile loop around the Salem Common.

Seaboard Distributors will be hosting the hospitality tent for the fourth year. Join us for a craft brew on a great summer afternoon of racing. A percentage of the proceeds from the sales go to the Salem Public Education Fund to support the growth and education of our future generations for years to come.

Past Witches Cup racers include Beverly native Tim Johnson, team captain of the HealthNet Pro Cycling Team, Multiple National Cyclocross Champion and winner of Australia's Herald Sun Tour. Racing in the Women’s event, and a Beverly resident, is Lyne Bessette, two-time member of the Canadian Olympic team, winner of the prestigious Tour de l'Aude Feminin as and the 2001 Women's Challenge, as well as the Beijing Olympic Cycling commentator in 2004. Also racing in the Women's event is the Boston Bike Czar and former US Olympic Cyclist, Nicole Freedman.

"The Witches Cup is a spectacular race course and I look forward to racing in front of friends and family. After traveling around the country I can't wait to get back in front of the home crowd." -- Tim Johnson

The Witches Cup, Salem's cycling race is returning for its seventh year after the successful rebirth of the historic race. In the cycling boom of the 1980s, Salem proudly hosted annual elite caliber bicycle events with national exposure. In 2000, the Witches Cup was part of the America’s Cup. The first edition Witches Cup ran from 1979 to 2001 as a top-level national event with such cyclists as Eric Heiden, Leonard Nitz and Frankie Andreau. After the past 4 great years it's easy to say that race organizers have revived the Witches Cup and this year's event is highly anticipated. The 2017 Witches Cup is currently sponsored by Salem Cycle, Comprehensive Racing, Choriste Partners, and Focus Power.
